Day 1 (L,D) Cusco – Cachora – Playa Rosalina
We depart Cusco at 6:00am for the 4-hour drive to Cachora. On the way we will make a stop to enjoy panoramas of the spectacular Limatambo Canyon, situated between the great Apu Salkantay and Humantay Mountains, then continue to the little village of Cachora. After joining our expedition support team know as ‘arrieros’ or ‘horsemen’, we start a soft hike through this mystical and rich historically territory. It is a 3-hour hike to Capuliyoc (2915m) from where we have our first beautiful views of the Apurimac valley stretching below as well as the snow-capped peaks of Padrayoc and Wayna Cachora. We then descend toward Coca Masana (2330m) where the climate becomes noticeably warmer and the flora and fauna begin to change.
After a long decent we arrive at Playa Rosalina (Rosalina Beach) at 1550m beside the raging Apurimac River, famous for its’ rafting, where we will set up camp and spend the night.
Day 2 Rosalina Beach – Choquequirao (B,L,D)
After breakfast, depart our campsite at 06:00am to cross the Apurimac River. We’ll climb switchback trails to Santa Rosa (2100m).
It is a 5-hour hike to Raqaypata beside the Chunchullumayo River where we will have a late lunch and a much deserved rest. Along we way we will observe many orchids, wild flowers and birds. From Raqaypata to Choquequirao (3035m) is a 2-hour hike. We will arrive at the archaeological site in time to enjoy the sunset and maybe the opportunity to see a Condor flying nearby. Our campsite will be just outside the ruins.
Day 3: Choquequirao – Raqaypata (B,L,D)
Today is dedicated to exploring this incredible sacred town of Choquequirao. Here you will see more elaborate buildings and solid 15th century Inca architecture. Our guide will explain the history and importance of the Site, followed by free time to visit the Complex. Late afternoon departure for return trek, stopping to camp for the night at Raqaypata.
Day 4 Raqaypata – Cachora – Cusco (B)
Today we leave the camp early and start the two or three hour climb to the Chiquisca, then we will make our way back to the Capuliyoc Pass, having another great opportunity to enjoy the canyon. After lunch we will continue our fairly flat return route to Cachora. From here we’ll catch our bus back to Cusco
