Trip Overview

With modern, air-conditioned bungalows, wireless Internet access, a hammock house, a beautiful swimming pool with slide, and a huge dining room and full bar, it qualifies as the only resort in Peru’s Amazon. This program combines some ancient tribal heritage with the incomparable biodiversity of the Peruvian Amazon. With visits to local communities and the search for river dolphins and piranha fishing, this short program is perfect for families or groups that would like a taste of the Peruvian Amazon.

Day 1 – Ceiba Tops Jungle Lodge (L, D)
Early morning private transfer to the Lima airport for a flight to Iquitos, deep in the Amazon Basin. Upon arrival, you will be greeted by a local guide at the Iquitos airport, followed by a brief city orientation and transfer to the port. From there, embark on a 25-mile journey down the Amazon River to Ceiba Tops, where you’ll stay in rooms equipped with air conditioning, private bathrooms, hot water, and electricity—providing the comforts of home in the rainforest. In the afternoon, enjoy an orientation hike in the beautiful primary rainforest reserve surrounding the lodge. After dinner, relax at the El Toucan Bar with local flute or guitar music, or listen to the guides share Amazon forest legends.

Day 2 – Ceiba Tops / Explorama Lodge / Ceiba Tops (B, L, D)
Begin the day with an early morning birding excursion. After breakfast, board boats to travel further down the Amazon River to the rustic Explorama Lodge. Here, you will hike the “Bushmaster Trail,” a site noted by the Missouri Botanical Gardens for having the world’s highest biodiversity of trees per square hectare. Next, visit a small Yagua Indian village, where your guide will explain their culture and its changes over time. You’ll have the opportunity to trade for or purchase local crafts and witness a demonstration of the traditional blowgun still used by some Yagua elders. After lunch, walk along a local Amazon River trail and stop at a “ribereños” house, a corner store, and a sugar cane rum factory. Return by boat to Ceiba Tops.

Day 3 – Ceiba Tops Jungle Lodge (B, L, D)
Start your day with early morning birding. In the morning, take a boat excursion to “Monkey Island,” a private reserve home to more than five species of tropical primates, including tamarins, saki, titi, and large woolly monkeys. In the afternoon, enjoy a boating trip in search of sloths resting in Cecropia trees at the water’s edge, and spot the two species of freshwater river dolphins—pink and grey—that inhabit the Amazon. Weather permitting, end your day with a stunning Amazonian sunset on the river.

Day 4 – Ceiba Tops Jungle Lodge (B, L, D)
Depart early in the morning by boat from Ceiba Tops to reach the narrow motorcar crossing between the Amazon and Napo Rivers. Continue by boat to ExplorNapo Lodge for breakfast. Then, hike to the incredible Canopy Walkway—over 500 meters (one-third of a mile) in length and rising over 35 meters (115 feet) high. The walkway is accessible without any climbing skill or equipment and is connected by tree platforms. After lunch, visit the “ReNuPeRu” Ethnobotanical Garden, which cultivates over 240 medicinal plants. A local shaman will guide you through the garden and share insights into Amazonian natural healing and plant uses. Return to Ceiba Tops in time to enjoy the pool or hammocks before dinner.

Day 5 – Ceiba Tops Jungle Lodge (B, L)
Choose between a morning walking or boating excursion to further explore the rainforest and Amazon River. In the afternoon, transfer to Iquitos and proceed to the airport for your return flight to Lima and onward travel out of Peru.
