Bomboli Cloud Forest
Welcome to the private Ecological Reserve of Bombolí. This beautiful cloud forest is lovingly cared for by an Ecuadorian couple who are deeply committed to the conservation and preservation of nature. Oswaldo (Oswaldito) Haro Aguirre, 72, and his wife Mariana (Marianita) Pérez, 62, purchased this property over 34 years ago with a single goal in mind: to restore the land. They never imagined that the reserve would one day gain such widespread recognition.
The name “Bombolí” was not the first choice for this paradise. Initially, they considered calling it “El Edén” or “Eden,” but Oswaldito felt the name lacked significance. He wanted something more meaningful, so he decided on “Bombolí,” inspired by the hill on which the reserve is located. The hill’s shape resembles a “bomba” or a balloon, making the name a perfect fit.

LOCATION
Bombolí is nestled in Ecuador’s western mountain range, along the road to Santo Domingo, just 35 minutes from Quito, the nation’s capital.
AREA
At first glance, the high moors (or páramo) may seem uniform and sparse, with grasslands dominating the slopes and fewer trees as you ascend. However, this ecosystem is far from barren. The high moors are a surprisingly diverse environment, thriving despite the harsh conditions of high altitudes.
With over 1,500 plant species, this ecosystem is a biodiversity hotspot. Remarkably, the páramo covers just 5% of Ecuador’s territory yet contains 10% of the country’s plant species, showcasing its ecological significance.
Bombolí itself is a hidden mountain gem, located directly across from Mount Niña Huilca — considered the last volcano of the Andes. On clear days, it offers breathtaking views, including sunsets over the Pacific Ocean, adding to its enchanting appeal.

FULL DAY ITINERARY
ITINERARY
The adventure begins early in the morning when our guides pick us up to journey to this natural paradise. Just 30 minutes from the town of Aloag, along the road to Ecuador’s coastal region, you’ll find Bombolí Private Reserve—a sanctuary offering peace and tranquility, complemented by an immersive connection with nature.
Upon arrival at the refuge house, the local family will extend a warm welcome. Oswaldo will provide an introduction, sharing insights about their life on the mountain and their unwavering commitment to forest conservation. Guests will then enjoy a tasting of delicious homemade products, including cheese, jams, and caramel cream, all crafted by the family.
Exploring the Gardens:
After this delightful welcome, the tour continues with a walk around the gardens surrounding the refuge. These gardens boast an array of native plants, such as orchids, ferns, begonias, and alders. Our host will share fascinating botanical and scientific details about the forest and his conservation efforts. During this walk, we will visit the Orchid Nursery, built by Oswaldo, which houses many miniature orchids unique to this area.
Forest Excursion:
We’ll then hike into the forest’s highlands to visit a small Polylepis forest, home to all three Polylepis species found in Ecuador. Adjacent to the forest is the family’s organic orchard, an innovative space where old car tires are repurposed as planters. The unique microclimate here supports a variety of edible plants, including lettuce, onions, mint, chamomile, carrots, cilantro, parsley, babaco, and more.
Continuing our hike, we’ll explore a trail surrounded by native trees, orchids, and other plants. Along the way, our guide will explain the natural health benefits of these plants. The trail leads us to the “Primary Forest of Millenary Ferns,” featuring majestic giant ferns and a small but enchanting waterfall during the rainy season.
Lunch and Hands-On Experiences:
After this enriching experience, we return to the main house for a delicious organic lunch prepared by Marianita, with ingredients primarily sourced from the reserve itself. After lunch, visitors can participate in making artisanal cheese, jams, or caramel cream. These high-quality, locally made products are available for purchase as souvenirs.
